Tonea Nicole Miller, a 27-year-old woman from Flint, Michigan, was found hanging from a tree in Gwen Cherry Park in the Gladeview neighborhood of Miami-Dade County on June 18, 2026 — one day before Juneteenth. Her sister later said she had been in Miami since February 2026. The park is named after Gwen Cherry, a pioneering Black Florida legislator.

/ Official Ruling

Consistent with suicide. The Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office said no evidence of foul play was found after investigation by the sheriff's office and county medical examiner.

Her sister Terri Miller traveled to Miami and identified the body at the Medical Examiner's office. The family is seeking an independent autopsy. The NAACP Miami-Dade chapter called for transparency. The case triggered the #JusticeForTonea movement on social media.
