/ What Happened
A 36-year-old Black man was found unresponsive hanging from a tree just off the Bridgeview Trail in Dimond Canyon on June 30, 2025. Oakland police, firefighters, and paramedics responded and cut the man down. No press release was issued by police and only one news outlet initially reported on the case. The Oaklandside chose not to publicly identify the man.
/ Official Ruling
Suicide. The Alameda County Coroner ruled the death a suicide after investigation, a determination announced in late August 2025.
/ What The Family Says
Oakland residents expressed strong skepticism and fear that the death may have been a lynching. Resident Kadie Kelly received Citizen app alerts and spoke with eyewitnesses, then shared posts urging the public to press authorities for transparency and further investigation. Rumors of foul play persisted for months.
