Da'Quain Johnson

Officer Involved

Age 32 · February 18, 2026 · Grand Rapids, Michigan

Eastern Avenue SE apartment complex

/ What Happened

Da'Quain Johnson, a 32-year-old father of three, was shot three times from behind while on the ground being restrained by a Grand Rapids Police K9 officer on February 18, 2026. He died the next day. Police said they suspected he had a gun while riding a bicycle. He was chased, a K9 bit him, and while on his stomach, an officer shot him. Witness video appeared to show Johnson being straddled by an officer before being shot. A gun was found under his body after the shooting.

/ Official Ruling

The Kent County Medical Examiner ruled the death a homicide (gunshot wound to the back). The Kent County Prosecutor determined the officer acted in self-defense and declined to file charges.

/ What The Family Says

Attorneys Ben Crump and Ven Johnson represent the family. His mother Angelica said he was a wonderful father who loved his kids dearly. The family was denied access to medical records and autopsy reports for weeks. The Grand Rapids NAACP demanded a full independent investigation. The prosecutor called the videos the most troubling he had seen in 30 years.
