Fair Oaks Park
Kyle Bassinga, a 21-year-old Georgia State University student, was reported missing on February 14 (Valentine's Day). Witnesses saw a man enter a wooded area of Fair Oaks Park around 4:28 PM that day. Four days later, on February 18, a 911 caller reported a dead person in the same wooded area. Bassinga was found hanging from a tree along a popular walking trail. A video had surfaced online showing him previously confronting a police officer about being unlawfully detained on campus.
Suicide. Cobb County Police said surveillance footage, witness interviews, and autopsy findings showed no evidence of foul play.
Civil rights activist Gerald Rose organized a prayer vigil and demanded further investigation. The community highlighted that Bassinga traveled approximately 30 miles from his university to this suburban park. Cobb County Chairwoman Lisa Cupid acknowledged the historical echoes, saying the case caused many to think of slavery and Jim Crow.
