Vacant business near Corrales Road and NM 528
Jayvon Givan, a 29-year-old from Kansas City, was found hanging by a metal chain from a stucco pillar outside a vacant business closed for renovations on September 17, 2024. He had left Kansas City to backpack across America. His body was cremated before his family knew he was dead. His cousin filed a missing persons report on October 1, 2025 — over a year later — and discovered police had been sitting on his case file the entire time.
Suicide. APD and the Office of the Medical Investigator ruled the death a suicide with no signs of foul play. A two-page incident report was filed.
His cousin Jada Walker said the family is certain he did not take his own life. They were upset no autopsy was done to their knowledge and that they were never notified. About 100 people rallied outside APD headquarters. APD Chief Harold Medina ordered an independent review. The New Mexico Department of Justice agreed to investigate. An Albuquerque city councilor spent weeks trying to locate his cremated remains.
